Vega Sicilia, Ribera del duero 1.5ltr.
This is a Magnum bottle 96+ Robert Parker
Bodegas Vega Sicilia belongs to the absolute top ten of the wine world and has long been an icon of wine country Spain. Founded in 1864, still very much alive, leading in quality and one of the most modern wineries in the country. This is partly thanks to the current owners, the Alvarez family, who bought Vega Sicilia in 1982 and since then, with relentless investments, in better and worse times, they have improved the quality of both the vineyard and the bodega. At the same time, they bought properties in Toro, Pintia and in Ribera del Duero, Alion. The estate on the River Duero is a thousand hectares in size. Two hundred hectares of this is planted with grape vines. The majority is tinto fino, the local version of the tempranillo. But there are also vines with cabernet sauvignon, malbec, merlot and even albillo, a local white grape variety. The tinto fino and albillo grow in gobelet form, while the Bordeaux varieties are guided along iron wire in guyot. The secret of Vega Sicilia lies in a complex of factors: * quality of the soil * climate (micro and meso) * large percentage of very old vines * very low yield, eight to twenty hectoliters per hectare, depending on the year * very long aging in barrel * perfectionism in all aspects! Unico is Vega's reference wine. In a good year, about one third of the production can consist of Unico. The wood aging system has remained unchanged since Vega established its reputation. After fermentation, the wine goes for a while in large oak casks. After this, selection of the wine takes place: will it be Unico or Valbuena? Valbuena is usually made from a blend of about 80% tinto fino and 20% merlot and malbec. In a year when Unico is not made, cabernet sauvignon can be added. The vines are at least twenty years old and the wine is aged in wood for three to four years according to the same recipe as Unico: first in barrel, then one year in French and American barrique, then back in wooden barrel and finally rest in bottle for another 1 to 2 years. Valbuena is not marketed until after five years. Valbuena is a great wine in itself and actually has all the characteristics of the Unico, but with a slightly different composition of grape varieties.
